ERNA

In loving memory of Erna Andersen of Kunststrik.dk

Please note that this pattern is to be used with yarn and needles of your own choice. As such there are no recommendations for yarn, needle size, gauge or finished size. Pattern has not been proofed - use at your own risk. Last edited May 21st 2008.

This triangular shawl is worked from the top down and starts with a few stitches at the center back. 4 stitches are added every other row inside the border stitches and on either side of the center stitch until shawl body has reached the required size. A sideways worked edging is then attached to the live border stitches so that only 8 stitches are cast off when the edging is done.

Shawl Body

The main part of the shawl body is worked in stocking stitch with bands of single lace motifs followed by a lace pattern border. A lacier version of the pattern for the main part of the body is also provided.

There are several ways to start the shawl - choose the one you are the most comfortable with.

Start option 1:
Cast on 6 stitches. Knit across.
Set up row 1: k2 (border stitches), yo, k2 (center stitches), yo, k2 (border stitches)
Set up row 2 and all following even rows: k2, purl to last 2 stitches, k2.
Continue with row 1 of chart.

Start option 2:
Provisionally cast on 2 stitches. Knit 8 rows. (4 ridges)
Set up row 1: k2 (border stitches), pick up and knit 4 stitches along the side of your rectangle (1 in each ridge, the middle 2 of these 4 stitches will be the center stitches), undo provisional cast on and place stitches on left needle, k2 (border stitches) (8 stitches in total)
Set up row 2 and all following even rows: k2, purl to last 2 stitches, k2.
Continue with row 3 of chart.

Start option 3:
Cast on 6 stitches using the disappearing loop method. Tighten loop, but do not join to a circle; turn and knit across.
Set up row 1: k2 (border stitches), yo, k2 (center stitches), yo, k2 (border stitches)
Set up row 2 and all following even rows: k2, purl to last 2 stitches, k2.
Continue with row 1 of chart.

After the set up rows, for a shawl with a border before the edging, continue knitting from chart A (as shown in picture), or A2 if you prefer a lacier version.

If you prefer a simpler shawl with just one lace pattern and no border, but still including the edging, you can use either one of charts A3, A4 or B2. These charts are at the bottom of the page, after the notes.

Charts for shawl body are read bottom to top, right to left, and show even rows only.
Pattern repeats are marked in colour.

Odd rows (except where indicated otherwise) are worked like this: k2, (border stitches, not shown on chart), work chart once, k2 (center stitches, not shown on chart), work chart 2nd time, k2 (border stitches, not shown on chart).
All even rows: k2, purl to last 2 stitches, k2

If using chart A: When you have worked row 44, repeat rows 25-44 for the required length of main part of shawl body.
Knit rows 45-50 once before continuing with chart B.

Note: row 45 should be mirrored on the left side of the shawl. This means that you should substitute skp with k2tog and end the row with k1bl, yo when you knit the chart the 2nd time.

If using chart A2: When you have worked row 20, repeat rows 11-20 for the required length of main part of shawl body.
Knit rows 21-30 once before continuing with chart B.

Note: row 25 should be mirrored. This means that you should substitute skp with k2tog and end with k1bl, yo when you knit the chart the 2nd time.

If using chart A3: When you have worked row 38, repeat rows 19-38 for the required length of shawl body.
Knit rows 39-40 once before continuing with the edging. Do not break yarn.

If using chart A4: When you have worked row 20, repeat rows 11-20 for the required length of shawl body.
Knit rows 21-28 once before continuing with the edging. Do not break yarn.

If using chart B2: When you have worked row 20, repeat rows 11-20 for the required length of shawl body.
Knit rows 21-30 once before continuing with the edging. Do not break yarn.

Chart B: Knit rows 1-10 as many times as required, knit rows 11-20 once before continuing with the edging. Do not break yarn.
Edging

The edging is worked in garter stitch and uses short rows to create fullness at shawl sides and center. You will work the edging back and forth, attaching it to the live stitches on shawl body as you work. You will probably find it easier to use a short straight needle to work the odd rows.

Charts for edging are read bottom to top, right to left, left to right and show all rows.

Continuing with shawl body yarn cast on 8 stitches and start the edging by working chart C1. Work rows 1-6A, then rows 7-24.
Next work chart C2, repating rows 1-20 until there are 7 stitches left before the 2 center stitches (last row should be a row 18).
Now work chart C1 as follows:
Rows 23-24 once.
Rows 5-24 3 times.
Rows 5-8 once.
Next work chart C2 again. Start with rows 5-20 and then repeat rows 1-20 until there are 8 stitches left of the shawl body.
Finish by working rows 5-30 of chart C1.
Whn you cast off on row 30, try to match the tension of the edging cast on.

Stitch up small slit at neck if you used start option 1; otherwise just secure yarn ends and block.

Slip stitch purlwise with yarn in front of work, then bring yarn to the back. This is the 2nd step in wrapping the stitch. When you knit the stitch on the next row make sure you insert the needle both under the wrap as well as into the stitch itself.

Notes:
Skp may be replaced by ssk if you prefer, but I do not recommend using k2tog through the back loop as this decrease twists the stitches. The difference may not be that noticeable, but twisting tightens up the stitches and may make a difference when blocking the finished piece.
